Scherzo: Allegro molto", "String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor, "Death and the Maiden", D. 810: IV. Presto", "String Quartet No. 13 in A Minor, "Rosamunde", D. 804: II. Andante", and many more.

Both cast in minor keys, the D minor Death and the Maiden Quartet and the A minor Rosamunde quartets represent different aspects of Schubert 's depressed, downtrodden state of mind. The D minor is the more forceful, agitated, and aggressive of the pair, while the A minor begins each movement in hushed tones and gives more of a sense of introspection and melancholy. This Hyperion album, a reissue as part of their 30th anniversary, features the sublime Takács Quartet. No matter how many recordings of these two epic quartets may be on the shelf, this one is absolutely a must-have addition.

The String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, known as Death and the Maiden, is a piece by Franz Schubert that has been called "one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire. It was composed in 1824, after the composer suffered a serious illness and realized that he was dying. It is named for the theme of the second movement, which Schubert took from a song he wrote in 1817 of the same title.

Schubert's String Quartet N. 4 in D minor brings together two of the composer's extraordinary talents. Schubert had a natural instinct for melody and song. His 600 Lieder (songs) and his song cycles are among the most expressive works in all music, connecting with human emotions in a deeply profound way. It’s impossible to separate Schubert's music from his own experience and, for me, this work always seems to capture his essence. The title 'Death and the Maiden' comes from one of Schubert’s earlier pieces in which a terror-stricken maiden begs death to pass her by. But death consoles her saying 'I am not rough, you shall sleep gently in my arms'.

When Schubert returns to the song in 1824 and starts work on the string quartet, death has nevertheless grown even more real: in the meantime he has become acquainted with pain and disease during the bouts of the syphilis that he knows will kill him. He turns the song into a set of variations, preceding it with a ferocious Allegro, and following it with a Scherzo and a Finale that have been described as ‘the dance of the demon fiddler’ and ‘a dance with death’. The acclaimed Chiaroscuro Quartet performs the work on gut strings, which brings out the vulnerability and desperation even further.

The ‘Rosamunde’ Quartet is a profoundly melancholy work, even by the standards of late Schubert, and the Takacs Quartet plumbs its emotional depths with an ideal balance of lyrical beauty, nostalgic longing, and terrible uncertainty. Their playing in ‘Death and the Maiden’ is even more impressive; from the stark, vibrato-less opening, there’s no doubt that where in the ‘Rosamunde’ we might have been teetering on the edge of a precipice, here we’ve plunged into the abyss, and the Takacs don’t shrink from the anger and violence of the score.
