The Greatest Hits: Why Try Harder is a greatest hits album by English electronic music producer Fatboy Slim. Release date: 19 June 2006. Label: Skint (UK), Astralwerks (US). Clear disc tray?: Yes. The Rockafeller Skank (G Minor). Praise You (G Major). Brimful of Asha (Norman Cook Remix) - Cornershop (Bb Major). Weapon of Choice (G Minor). Gangster Trippin (Main key: D Minor, Accompanying keys: F Major). I See You Baby (Fatboy Slim Remix) - Groove Armada (G Major). Wonderful Night (D Minor).

The new Fatboy Slim compilation, The Greatest Hits: Why Try Harder, shows that the DJ who originally named himself Norman Cook was, as his detractors alleged, a product of his time. Sure, the erstwhile Housemartins member's formula- eclectic samples, sloganistic vocal snippets, and an all-around drunken good-time spirit- was just that, a formula, but it befit an era of peace, blowjobs, and Men in Black. Yes, it was a cheap trick to slow vocal tracks down until they crumble like a worn-out robot, then accelerate them until they blare like a police siren.

Instead, Why Try Harder goes for the gloss, and does so triumphantly. Praise You," "Weapon of Choice," and "Right Here, Right Now" are all instantly recognizable tracks and packed so tight together that they create a whirlwind of big beat excitement. The curious can now skip the so-so Palookaville since its best is here, but those bitten by the big beat bug will have to go further, because Cook's best productions weren't always his singles. Two new numbers - "Champion Sound" and "That Old Pair of Jeans" with Lateef of Blackalicious.
