Room Inside the World is a trove of art-rock and post-punk. Always leaving the listener quite unsure of its potential, it cements Ought’s reputation as an exciting band perfectly capable of evolution and reinvention. Very nice catchy art-rock/post-punk vibes that make an album full of very beautiful texturized vocal melodies and guitar rhythms. The shift in tone takes effect immediately on "Into the Sea", which begins quietly with piano chords and the throaty delivery of the line, "I see the stain in the people no. The song develops into a churning, groovy post-punk tune that manages to be recognizable as Ought but is a whole lot smoother in its construction and it stripped down in a lot of ways. Ought's ability to fully inhabit and execute the sound they are aiming for on any given album is notable, of course, and it doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't hints of how each sonic style affects the others. Disaffectation" and "Take Everything" are prime examples of the band translating their fascination with harmonic tension into the context of a cleaner sound.

On Room Inside the World Ought's third album and first for Merge growing up doesn't mean mellowing out so much as it means learning to pay attention, listening carefully and openly, staying somewhere long enough to really understand where you are. Recorded at Rare Book Room in Brooklyn with producer Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, Animal Collective, Silver Jews), Room Inside the World explores themes that have always concerned the band identity, connection, survival in a precarious world but with a bolder, more nuanced sound palette.

Room Inside the World, Ought’s third album and their first for Merge. Ought approached this record with newfound patience. Together, they constructed a (digital) moodboard to set their intentions: Brian Eno and Stereolab synths, the Mekons’ 1985 album Fear and Whiskey, and Gerhard Richter and Kenneth Anger’s sexy, fluorescent hyperreal all made it into the melting pot. The process of everybody wading into each other’s subconscious was really excellent, says frontman, guitarist, and lyricist Tim Darcy.
